BACCHUS RESTAURANT - Restaurants in Mdina, Wedding Venues Malta, Event Venue Malta, Medevial Mdina

Character, Charm and Nobility

Situated in the heart of Mdina, your first encounter into the restaurant is a delightful dining area behind an iron ‘Portcullis’. Bacchus is housed in the two chambers built by Grand Master Fra Martino De Redin in between 1657 and 1660 as gunpowder magazines for the main fortified bastion built by him to fortify the Old City of Mdina.

The chambers are double vaulted and have preserved their original characteristics. They were built in between original ROMAN settlement walls dating back to the 1st century and the ARAB wall dating back to the 10th century. All original features have been retained.

Situated in the heart of Mdina, Bacchus has been preparing and serving quality food for the last thirty five years. These aristocratic chambers have been transformed into the perfect environment for enjoying a first class meal with warm service. The extensive menu features dishes from the Mediterranean, together with signature dishes which have proved favourites amongst patrons for 35 years.

Open 7 days reservations are recommended on tel. 21454981 for either the chambers or ‘al fresco’ dining on the Bastion terrace on warm summer nights.

Upstairs from the restaurant dining area is a banqueting room, which will comfortably seat 500 guests. This overlooks a beautiful garden which itself overlooks Mdina. These gardens and banqueting room are frequently used for private functions, banqueting and wedding receptions.

All of the catering is carried in-house, and a stand-up reception can easily be arranged for in excess of 1000 guests! The actual size of this incredible property and its gardens equate to approximately one twelfth of the whole of Mdina.

COOGI'S RESTAURANTS IN MDINA - CAFES IN MDINA RABAT MALTA, TEA GARDEN IN MDINA

"Passion, Character and Charm in the Heart of Mdina"

Grape vine covered courtyards, home grown herbs, multi coloured lights, and a myriad of wind chimes give a flirtatious wink of what's to come. You feel like a special guest in your best friend's home.

If you have visited Coogi's before then you surely don't need reminding that the courtyards, bastions and internal medieval rooms are simply magical when bathed in soft candle light.

Dining beneath the vine, accompanied by the tinkling of wind chimes, and the sound of running water is to be transported to a peaceful place which is all to easy to forget still exists here in Malta.

The staff at Coogi's also play their role, they are very friendly, attentive, brisk, and well-mannered - a breath of fresh air in itself.

Our menu is Italian, Maltese and Mediterranean in concept.

History

A short history about the building itself.

Essentially, this was an old Arab townhouse, with some walls of Arab origin, and some rooms dating back to the Norman era, with later additions throughout history.

Its façade faces South, while the bastion terrace looks toward the North, over land and sea, with St. Paul's Bay visible in the distance, and even Sicily on some clear nights.

There is an underground spring and functioning well, and even a wartime air raid shelter. The shelter was hewn directly into the bastion walls.

This place was in a state of disrepair when we first took it over, but we worked hard to retain all of the original features and built around these unique features (and on top of them, under them etc. etc...).

We hope you enjoy the unique atmosphere this building helps to create.

THE MDINA EXPERIENCE MALTA - TOURIST ATTRACTION MALTA, CULTURAL ATTRACTION MALTA, MEDIEVAL TAVERN WINE BAR MDINA

Take an unforgettable 30 minutes to experience Mdina’s fascinating journey through time. Relive Mdina’s 7000 years of triumph and tribulations – the cult of the mother Goddess – the shipwreck of St. Paul – the medieval city half destroyed by earthquake and gloriously rebuilt. The spirit of the knights of St. John, fighting valiantly in battles to defend the Maltese Islands still resounds. There’s ancient history and realism here, but above all there’s high drama, which is the story of the Mdina Experience.
