Our restaurant recalls the name of a ferry that used to cross over between Gozo and Malta in the 20th century. It was bought by Joseph Gasan in 1947. It was modernized into a passenger ferry until the Gozo mail service was introduced in 1950. On 23rd January, the Bancinu broke its moorings and was driven ashore at Mgarr during a storm. After the Royal Navy salvage vessel Uplifter salvaged the Bancinu on 10th February, it was towed to the Grand Harbour. Later in December it was sold to a Greek marine company and was renamed Athinai.

Beppe's Restaurant recently opened its doors in Sannat. Previously in Marsalforn,  Beppe's moved to a new venue which forms part of the Quaint Boutique Hotel in Sannat. The concept features an open kitchen with a wood burning grill, aged meat on display and a chef's table. While still maintaining the informal atmosphere created and overseen by owner/chef Joseph Spiteri and his professional team, their priority remains quality, flavour and presentation accompanied by a warm welcome.

The menu's main focus are gourmet hot dogs that are a little bit out of the ordinary. In fact, they have a whooping 14 hot dogs to choose from including the Heatwave (with Doritos, rucola, salami spinata and sriracha sauce), the Mexican Paradise (chili con carne, jalapenos and firecracker mayo), the Pork Hog Roast (with crispy bacon, provolone cheese, fried egg, crispy onions, three peppercorn sauce) and the Maltese Sausage (local pork sausage, caramelised onions, Gozitan peppered cheese-lets).

If you fancy an alternative to pork, you might want to wrap your lips around the Asparagus Chicken (with mozzarella di bufala, bresaola), the Minty Lamb, the Salmon Sensation, the Lemon Chicken (with goat cheese and a beetroot relish) or the BlackedOut (pork and beef sausage, crispy onions, melted cheese, bacon, pulled pork bites and in-house sauce).

More of a burger fan? Black Paw has you covered. Choose from their classic Angus beef (with provolone cheese, tomatoes and raw red onions), a buttermilk chicken burger, a breaded salmon fillet burger and more.

Nibbles come in the form of buttered chicken nuggets, pulled pork bites, crispy chicken wings or Asian chicken cigars. Upgrade your meal with either sweet potato fries, waffle fries or curly fries... or choose from their hearty salads.

Vegans have not been left out. Black Paw's plant-based offering includes a Moving Mountains burger (with baby spinach, vine tomatoes, relish and tzatziki dressing) and a vegan hot dog (with vegan sausage, lettuce, spinach, carrots, guacamole relish and tzatziki dressing).

This is the tale of the Nissen Hut

The first Bobbyland was housed in a Nissen Hut. The present bar stands on the side of that hut. It was the technician’s workshop for the R.A.F. Signal Station for the Maltese Islands. Incidentally, the Station itself was where the present kitchen stands.

In the late 40’s and early 50’s Reno, then a boy of about 7, used to bring sheep and goats to graze here. He became very friendly with the airmen, bringing them some fruit. In return they would give him biscuits and chocolate. One airman was particularly kind, and, when asked for his name, he said, “Call me Bobby”. The place was beautifully kept, with flowers everywhere.

When Reno was encouraged, in 1970, by the cast of “Eye-Witness”, which was being shot using this area as a background, to open the hut as a coffee shop/bar, he decided to use his friend’s name, and this is how “Bobbyland” came into being.

The original Nissen hut was opened simply as a bar. This flourished. Reno went to Libya to earn money to put into his project, conceiving the idea of opening also a restaurant.

In 1983 the restaurant was built alongside the Nissan hut bar and was linked with it. Later stone walls were constructed round the Nissen hut to make the present bar, and the hut, still in fine condition, was dismantled and removed.

In 2008 Aynor, Reno’s daughter and her husband Dennis refurbished the restaurant and took over the management to keep it in the family.
